Lakes in Kolkata

Lakes show how healthy, how roomy a city is. Kolkata is a pretty old city and the lakes here are not many. But in what ever number they are, they have been centers of tourist attraction for years. Most of them are originated from the Ganges River, the life-stream of the city. Lakes in Kolkata are the center for angling, boat rowing and swimming. There are small and midsized lakes in the city, but three of these are really stand apart.

Rabindra Sarobar Lake

Rabindra Sarobar is amongst the largest lakes in Kolkata. The place is everyday visited by joggers, morning walkers and nature-activists. The lake is formed as a combination of two lakes, therefore have become really large. Joggers and morning walkers chose the lake of Kolkata as a place for regular visit, the old citizens love to share experienced thoughts with each other here, the lovebirds come here for speaking the deepest truth of their heart, the children come to plunge in the ;large swimming pool. But the place is mostly popular for rowing as the Calcutta Rowing Club has its tent here and organizes several events throughout the year. The hovercraft installed here has made it the best among lakes in Kolkata.

The Rabindra Sarobar lake of Kolkata covers 76 hectors of huge cut of land. Its on the Southern part of Kolkata. There are lovely sidewalks and heaving trees apart from the main attraction, the lake. It is a like a pair of lungs to South Kolkata. The Ministry of Environment and Forest have marked this tarn of Kolkata as one of the places to develop yet. The crystal clear water is a playing place for many fishes while on the central island, many birds come. The Open Theater within the arena is a plus for culturists.


Just on the outskirts of the city, Nalban serves as one of the most popular lakes in Kolkata. It’s an unruffled natural tourist spot which is built up around a giant lake. The lake is the place where tourists enjoy water sports and boating. It is just 6 kilometers from the city airport. But boating is the main attraction here in this Kolkata Lake. There are gorgeous Shikaras and simple paddle boats that can be hired. The other side of the lake is full of fishes and birds. In a short, the lake gifts quietude to its visitors at the fullest. The bistros of the Nalban Lake and boating complex serve authentic Bengali dishes that are very popular. In fact, this is one of the reasons of making Nalban one of the most popular lakes in Kolkata.

Subhash Lake

Subhash Lake is named after Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, the fêted leader of the country. It is situated just opposite 89 Cinemas and just a few kilometers drive from the core of the city. The lake is surrounded by playgrounds that are mostly used for local youth section. The sideways of one of the well-known lakes in Kolkata are really beautiful.
