  • Lakshmipat Singhania Academy of Kolkata celebrates birth centenary celebrations of their founder Lala Lakshmipat Singhania thereby organizing inter-school events, debate and Hindi extempore.
  • Apeejay School of Kolkata was in news when it hosted the unique Lit Era Tour. An essay writing competition titled 'Creative minds at work' was held in Kolkata where budding writer’s had to pen down their creative thoughts on many topics.
  • Rabindranath Tagore 150th birth anniversary was celebrated in the city of Kolkata with various cultural events and exhibitions. Tagore's was famous as a great poet, novelist, musician, playwright and philosopher. An exhibition of the paintings of the “accidental artist,” was inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on May 9.
  • The three-day Mother Teresa International Film Festival (MTIFF) will be initiated in the month of August at the state film center, Nandan. The Festival will be hosted on nuns from 18 countries as said by the festival director Sunil Lucas.
  • Consumer electronics giant LG Electronics India Private Ltd plans to promote football in the country. “India has never qualified as far as World Cup soccer is concerned”. The company has organized ‘para (street)’ football matches in Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal.
  • The National Photo Awards have been launched for the first time in order to honor the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of Photo Division, the Media Unit of Ministry of I&B.
  • The awards shall be given by the Hon’ble Vice President of India, H.E.Shri M.Hamid Ansari, at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. The awards of “Life Time Achievement Awards” would be given to eminent photojournalists. The awards would include a cash prize of Rs.1.50 lakhs, a Shawl, a Memento and a Citation. Shri Benu Sen of Kolkata, a 79 year old living legend who excelled in the field of Pictorial photography was awarded with the Life Time Achievement Award for the Pictorialists category. He is the Secretary-General, Federation of Indian Photography and President of Photographic Association of Dum Dum.
  • The Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust was set up by Mahatma Gandhi in 1945 that addressed the issues of women in rural India. The trust has asked the Union information minister Ambika Soni, to screen documentary on Rabindranath Tagore by Films Division in the areas of Rural Bengal.
  • Kolkata-based electric company CESC Ltd reported a net profit of Rs110 crore during its first quarter which ended on 30 June 2010 as compared to Rs.105 crore for the same quarter during the last year.
