Western Kolkata


Western Kolkata is one of the districts of the Kolkata city which largely comprises of areas like Howrah, BBD Bag and much more. The western suburbs of the area is mainly divided from Howrah west by the Hooghly river. The western regions are mainly industrial estates and there are several industrial units located nearby the place. Some of the famous docks and shipyard building are mainly situated in these regions. The west Eastern Railways mainly connects the western region with the other parts of the city.

There are several manufacturing units set up in Western Kolkata. The primary industrial units in Western Kolkata are chemicals, paints, metal plating and galvanizing. Western Kolkata is not only a main industrial regions but even supports huge population.

Kolkata West International City is an uprising satellite township development centre in Western Kolkata that is spread across an area of 390.2 acres. The township has about 6,100 bungalows, three IT parks, a 13 acre club, a 200-bed hospital, four high-rise residential towers, two schools and shopping and entertainment centers which are all within the Howrah region.

Kolkata West International City is close to the Howrah-Amta Road almost near the NH 6. It is almost 9 km (6 mi) from Benoy Badal Dinesh Bag, which is the heart of Kolkata and is about 12 km from Vidyasagar Setu that mainly connects Kolkata with Howrah.

It is made by the venture group of Salim and Ciputra from Indonesia and the Universal Success Group of Jakarta-based Non-Resident Indian Prasoon Mukherjee.

Vidyasagar Setu

Vidyasagar Setu is even recognized as the Second Hooghly Bridge situated along the Hooghly River in West Bengal. It links Howrah to Kolkata. Vidyasagar Setu is a toll bridge where all types of vehicles ply. It is one of the longest bridges of its type in India and one of the longest in Asia. The bridge is named after the great Bengali reformist Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar of the 19th century. Vidyasagar Setu has sister bridges, namely Howrah Bridge (Rabindra Setu), the Vivekananda Setu and the Nivedita Setu.

Kolkata Race Course

Kolkata Race Course is situated in Western Kolkata and is one of the principal horse race locations in India. The race course was set up in the year 1820 and was maintained by the Royal Calcutta Turf Club. The races are generally held from July to September and other from November to March. The races are usually held on Saturdays, and also on other public holidays.

Belur Math

The Belur Math is the main attraction situated near Howrah. It is the headquarters of Ramakrishna Mission. Western Kolkata attracts several visitors to its pilgrimage destination like Belur Math all year long.

Botanical Garden

The Botanical garden is one of the prime attractions of Western Kolkata. It was set up in the year 1787 by Lieutenant Colonel Robert Kyd.

The garden is positioned on the west bank of Hooghly Ganges. The garden is spread to an area of 273 acres. The landscape design of the garden was made by Sir George King in 1872.

It is one of the best botanical garden in the world which comprises of 12,000 trees and shrubs pertaining to 1400 species. Bougainvillea, Citrus, Jasmine, Pandanus, Water Lilies are some of the rarest collection of Palms comprising of 109 species which is the main attraction of the garden.
